Beautiful Scents Inspire: How to Make a Stunning Terrarium

During a recent visit, a friend of mine expressed admiration over the transformation of my home throughout the years. I admit it feels good to have finally found a way to express myself through it. Now, much like an artist's canvas, it acts as a medium, progressively revealing the personalities, values and habits of my husband and I, as you wind from one room to another.
Yet looking aesthetically pleasing is only a part of the experience. It also needs to appeal to other senses that contribute to its enjoyment. One of those is the sense of smell.
What's YOUR Home's Story?
Have you ever noticed how a scent can tell the story of your entire home even before anyone sees what's inside of it? A captivating aroma can announce tonight's dinner menu. Or the soft scent of talcum lets one know there's a baby nearby. What is also remarkable is how a scent can carry us along with it, TELLING us what to do. How to think. What to feel. Often, without even thinking about it, we play into this silent, yet powerful narration. If a scent can do all of that imagine the role it can play in beautifying your home.
Whenever I embark on a new design project I like to have certain elements in place. A clean, organized home with an alluring fragrance can boost my creativity immediately. So during a recent shopping trip to Kroger, I seized the opportunity to try a refined line of products called Atmosphere Collection Fine Home Fragrance by Glade ®
Over the years I've enjoyed using many Glade® products. But this one is different. It's a fine line of artisanal scents crafted by world-renowned luxury fragrance designer Ann Gottlieb. Y'all know I'm all about moderately priced things that pay high dividends on quality, looks— and scents. So I HAD to try this.
I planned to create a focal piece for the transition area between my dining and living rooms, and needed something to encourage me along the way. The Nº 1 Enraptured™Jasmine and Cedarwood Jar Candle immediately seized my attention. It's complex blend of Jasmine, lady apples, and sweetheart rose petals on cedarwood matched exactly— in a scent— what I was trying to create visually.
While there I also picked up the Nº 3 Free PlugIns® Scented Oils, 2 ct. also by Glade®. Its beachy coconut cocktail scent would be perfect for my bedroom.
After grabbing a few other grocery items I headed home to start a mini design project— creating a terrarium. Don’t you just love it when you don’t have to head to a specialty store to score a unique find? I certainly do!
When I returned home I opened my latest home scent, let it trigger my emotions and got to work. Here's a quick tutorial on what I did.
How to Make Your Own Stunning Terrarium
Materials Used:
- A glass vessel
- Rocks for faux drainage
- 3-5 faux succulents
- Moss
- Long stems
- A few pieces of bling chips (c'mon you knew that was coming)
And of course I had my Nº 1 Enraptured™Jasmine and Cedarwood Jar Candle nearby to inspire me along the way.
Step 1: Since this is a rather large vessel I placed a layer of earthy stones at the bottom, followed by a thin layer of small white rocks. These will serve as faux drainage.
Step 2: I inserted 2 long stemmed greenery with a portion of the stems tucked underneath the weight of the rocks for stability. A typical terrarium might not have long stems protruding from it. But you KNOW me; I am anything but typical.
The photos below shows both the base layers, and the long stems in place.
Step 3: Faux succulents of varying sizes were strategically placed inside the glass container.
Step 4: Carefully I placed a few larger white rocks all around the stems of the succulents and long stems. I did this for architectural interest as well as for additional stability.
Step 5: Moss was added in small patches last to make everything pretty. I love the unusual plum red colored moss.
Finally, the finished piece was ready to be showcased.
When my husband returned home he got a whiff of the enchanting scent that helped inspire my latest project. Then, he noticed the new terrarium. He stared at it curiously for a few seconds then reached out to touch it. However, he stopped his hand midway instead and waved it to and fro as if to caress the air. Then he smiled... Mission accomplished! Yes, beautiful scents do indeed inspire beautiful spaces.
